Mies van der Rohe - Barcelona Pavilion
Mies van der Rohe Pavilion. The Barcelona Pavilion was designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (born March 27 1886 died August 17 1969) as the German National Pavilion for the 1929 Barcelona International Exhibition. The Barcelona Pavilion is an emblematic work of the Modern Movement, and has inspired generations of architects. Built from glass, travertine and different kinds of marble, the Barcelona Pavilion was conceived to accommodate the official reception presided over by King Alphonso XIII of Spain with the German authorities. After the Exhibition ended the Pavilion was taken down in 1930, but as time went by, it became a key point of reference, not only in Mies van der Rohe's own career but also in twentieth-century architecture.

The significance and reputation of the Barcelona pavilion paved the way for a reconstruction. In 1980 Oriol Bohigas, head of the Urban Planning Department at the Barcelona City Council, set the reconstruction project in motion, designating architects Ignasi de Solé-Morales, Cristian Cirici and Fernando Ramos to research, design and supervise the reconstruction of the Pavilion.

Work began in 1983 and the new building was opened on its original site in 1986 Ludwig Mies van der Rohe also designed the
Barcelona chair for the Barcelona Pavilion. The Barcelona chair has become an icon of modern design and is still manufactured and marketed to this day. Mies van der Rohe continues to inspire in the future; the building designs in 2014 sci-fi movie Interstellar were inspired by the works of Mies van der Rohe.
