Poble Espanyol - Spanish village
El Poble Espanyol de Montjuic. Spanish village Barcelona. Address and map. Poble Espanyol is an open air museum in Barcelona with 40 handicraft shops and a variety of excellent restaurants and bars. In the summer from May there are open air night clubs and all year round you can enjoy one of Barcelona's best flamenco shows called El Tablao de Carmen. The Spanish village was built in 1929 for the Barcelona International Exhibition to be a real "village" in the middle of a city with a surface area of 49,000 m2. The aim was to create a "ideal model" of a Spanish village with elements of all towns and villages on the entire Iberian peninsula. The 117 buildings, streets and squares represent different styles from regions of Spain. It was built in thirteen months and only intended to stay open for the six months of the Universal Exhibition in 1929. But it was a great success and has stay open ever since. El Poble Espanyol combines history and art with more than forty art and craft workshops and shops working in the open-air museum. Experience the wonder of historic handmade production techniques and qualities and appreciate how innovative elements of design and shape can enrich a traditional product. The craft techniques that can currently be found here are: ceramics, engraving, decorative painting, glass blowing, puppet-making, jewellery, masks, fans, sculpture, leather, embroidery, basket-weaving, musical instrument-making, espadrille-making and many others. Poble Espanyol also hosts GastroPop which is a monthly 1 day food festival which takes place every last Saturday of the month. Gastropop changes theme every month with the aim of showcasing the gastronomy of different regions of Catalunya in Barcelona.
