General strike Barcelona News. All public transport including metro, buses, trams, airport buses etc will only operate at 33% of its normal level and only during rush hours on 14th November 2012. You might also experience disruptions of normal service in other types of business during the general strike and some museums, restaurants and shops in the centre will probably be closed. Is it safe for tourists in Barcelona during the general strike? Yes. The demonstrations are generally peaceful, but there can be violent and isolated incidents, so we advise you to take normal precautions and generally not to stay near or in the protest marches at a late hour as sometimes the protests can turn violent in the final hours late at night.

The main event of the 14N protest demonstration in Barcelona starts at 18.00 / 6pm on Plaza Catalunya. The demonstration route is up Passeig de Gracia (in the direction of the Tibidabo hill) and up Av Diagonal to end at the junction of Av Diagonal and Gran Via de Carles III. There will be nine picket lines around the city organised by the unions to attempt to paralyse commerce and movement in the city.

Spanish unions UGT and CCOO called this general strike in Spain on 14th November 2012, which is the same day as a pan-European day of protest against general austerity policies, to protest the austerity cuts of the government of Mariano Rajoy. The strike is on Wednesday 14th November 2012 and is called "14N". The general strike on 14th November will affect airline flights and cause both delays and cancellations, so we recommend that you check with your airline if you are flying on that day. If you can re-book then it is probably advisable as disruptions are very likely.

Only minimum services of around 33% of metro, trams, buses, trains, flights and ferries will be operational during peak hours. Best advice is to avoid travel to and in Barcelona on 14th November. Usually the following minimum transport services are available

FGC and Rodalies trains:
33% of normal operation in peak rush hours from 06:00 to 09.30 and from 16.30 to 20.30. No services rest of the day on 14th November. The rodalies/cercanias station Passeig de Gracia will close at 19:00 / 7pm on 14/11

AVE trains
Expected to be at 20% of normal operation

Barcelona tourist buses, city buses, trams and metro:
33% of normal operation in peak rush hours from 06:00 to 09.30 and from 16.30 to 20.30. No services rest of the day on 14th November. Buses are however also on partial strike on other days of this week. The Bus Turistic hop-on hop off tourist buses will not operate on 14th November.

Barcelona airport buses Aerobus
33% of the service between 6:30 and 09:30 and between 16:30 and 20:30 hours. The rest of the day there will be no service on Lines A1 and A2. Also evening service on before the 13th November ends as follows; last departature from terminals T1 and T2 towards Barcelona city is at 23:25. Last departure on 13/11 from Plaça Catalunya to airport terminals is at 23:30 for line A1 and 23:30 for line A2 More info

Barcelona airport and flights
Expect many flights to be cancelled on 14th November 2012. Service will be normal again from Thursday 15th November.
