La Fiesta Mayor de Sitges - called Festa Major i Santa Tecla 2014 - is the biggest annual festival in Sitges which is a delightful seaside resort 40 minutes south of Barcelona by train. The festival takes its name from Sant Bartolomeu, patron saint of Sitges.
The Festa Major de Sitges takes place in August every year and like other Catalan festa major celebrations, you can see many Catalan traditions including processions with gegants (giants) - capgrossos (big paper mache heads), correfocs (fireruns) - bastoners (stick dances) and a full programme of music and concerts and of course sardanes dancing and castellers groups who build impressive human towers.
One of the popular highlights of the festival is a 15 to 20 minute fireworks display (called castell de foc) on the beach in front of the church at 11pm. Download the full Sitges festa Major programme by clicking on the links below and follow the Festa Major de Sitges Twitter.
