The name Montserrat means "serrated mountain" in Catalan which is a perfect description for this unusual and jagged mountain massif. The name originates from the Romans, who called it Mons Serratus. It is also, but less frequently, called Montsagrat by the Catalans, which means “sacred mountain.” Montserrat is home to the "Santuari de La mar de Déu" the "Sanctuary of Our Lady of Montserrat" which is one of Spain’s most famous Benedictine monasteries, the Monestir de Montserrat and home to the famous Black virgin of Montserrat. The Montserrat monastery has a history spanning almost a thousand years. It has an impressive art gallery and in the Basilica you might be lucky and hear one of the oldest boys’ choirs in Europe called "Escolania de Montserrat who sing most days at 1pm.
