The name originates from the Romans, who called it Mons Serratus. It is also, but less frequently, called Montsagrat by the Catalans, which means “sacred mountain.” Montserrat is home to the "Santuari de La mar de Déu," the "Sanctuary of Our Lady of Montserrat" and one of Spain’s most famous Benedictine monasteries, the Monestir de Montserrat. The Montserrat monastery has a history spanning almost a thousand years. It has an impressive art gallery and in the Royal Basilica you might be lucky and hear one of the oldest boys’ choirs in Europe called "Escolania de Montserrat.
