Gaudi's house museum
Antoni Gaudi's house museum Barcelona. Casa Museu Gaudi. This was Antoni Gaudi's house in Park Guell and is now the home of the Gaudi museum. Gaudi did not design this house, but he designed the wonderful Park Guell where the house stands. Gaudi's house was originally constructed as a showcase house in Park Guell to show future buyers what it might be like to live in Park Guell, which was originally a sixty house garden city residential development project in Barcelona. The Park Guell project was not a success and so later the area was just stayed the way it was and became a public park called Park Guell. The reason Gaudi lived here was that the owner of the park Eusepi Guell suggested that Gaudi could live there, when it was obvious that no-one was interested in buying houses at Park Guell. So Anton Gaudi bought the house and used it as a residence for his father and his niece. Gaudi's father died almost immediately after moving in but Gaudi's niece with Gaudi for 6 years. Gaudi himself lived here from 1906 until 1925, when he moved into his studio at the Sagrada Famila in the final year of his life to be closer to his greatest creation which is the Sagrada Familia temple. The Gaudi house museum today contains a collection of furniture designed by Gaudi including his original work desk and his bedroom, which remains largely as it was when he lived there. His death mask is also on display. Today the house is owned and managed by by the construction board of La Sagrada Família Foundation. Admission to Park Guell is free although there are plans to charge tourists starting from the end of 2012. The Gaudi museum charges an admission free of €5.50 (2012 prices)
