The Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys (previously called the Estadi Olímpic de Montjuïc) is the sports stadium on Montjuic mountain, which overlooks Barcelona from the south of the city. It was originally built in 1927 for the 1929 Barcelona World Exposition and was rebuilt in 1989 to be the main venue for the 1992 Summer Olympics.
The stadium is named after the former president of the Generalitat de Catalunya Lluís Companys i Jover. Companys was executed at the nearby Montjuïc Castle in 1940 by the dictator Franco's regime.
The stadium has a capacity of 55,926, and has been the home ground of Barcelona's other premier football team RCD Espanyol since 1998. |
