Montjuic is a 230m hill that overlooks Barcelona from the South East of the city centre.
This was a perfect place from a military point of view to place a fort - Montjuïc Fort - Castell de Montjuic
- both to defend the city and control it.

One of the oldest structures on Montjuïc hill is the Castell de Montjuïc. The current fort is

but also to keep the Catalans in line during times of oppression.
The fortress houses the
Museu Militar -military museum and the grounds of the fort are
used for many other activities like archery clubs, concerts and outdoor cinema.
In the spring of 2008 the Military Museum will be moved and the fort will be used exclusively for cultural activities.
