Montserrat Mountains & Monserrat Monastery
Montserrat is located about 1 hour away from Barcelona. It is one of Barcelona and indeed Spain's major tourist attractions because of the breathtaking scenery and amazing rock formations with panoramic views. The name Montserrat means "jagged mountain" in Catalan. When you see this very unusual and jagged mountain massif, you can see how well the name fits. The name originates from the Romans, who called it Mons Serratus. It is also, but less frequently called Montsagrat by the Catalans, which means “sacred mountain”. Montserrat is not just a mountain, but home of the Santuari de La mar de Déu, the "Sanctuary of Our Lady of Montserrat" and home to one of Spain’s most famous Benedictine monasteries, the Monestir de Montserrat. The Montserrat monastery has a history spanning almost a thousand years. It includes impressive art gallery and in the Royal Basilica you can experience of the oldest boys’ choirs in Europe, the Escolania de Montserrat.
