The Ciutadella Park in Barcelona, which was opened to the public in 1877, is Barcelona's oldest, biggest and most popular public park in the city. Ciutadella Park is home to the Barcelona Zoo. it has a small lake with rowing boats for rent,  a wonderful fountain with waterfall,  a number of museums and is home to the seat of the  Catalan Parliament. Gaudi was a young architect student in 1888.

The General Joan Prim equestrian statue is nicely situated at the end of an avenue of lime trees.  Prim is commorated for demolishing the Ciutadella garrison, where the park is located.  The current Prim tsatue is the second version. The original statue made by Lluís Puiggener from 1887 was melted down during the Spanish Civil war of 1936 to 1939. After the war ended a new statue was made by the sculptor Frederic Marès in 1940.
