The Fundació Joan Miró - Joan Miro Foundation in Barcelona is located on the Avinguda de Miramar on the hill of Montjuïc. Joan Miro was a Catalan painter, sculptor and ceramist born in Barcelona, Spain. This museum is worth a visit just for the architectural design of the building and the views of the city. It houses the largest collection in the world of Miró's work including paintings, drawings, sculptures, and tapestries as well as his complete graphic work. Another popular exhibit is the Alexander Calder Mercury fountain that uses mercury instead of water. It is from the Spanish Pavilion at the 1937 World's Fair in Paris and is a tribute to the town of Almadén which supplied over half of the world's mercury at the time. The fountain was commissioned to commerate the siege of the town by the dictator Franco's troops. The fountain is now displayed in a containter becuase we now know that mercury is very toxic. Other Miro works in Barcelona are the "Woman and Bird" in the Parc de Joan Miro. If you land at the T2 terminal of Barcelona airport there is a big mural by Miro and if you are on La Rambla look for pavement mosaic on "Pla de l'Os." from 1976 and near to the birthplace of Miro on the street "Passatge del Crèdit"
