Show only from Thursday to Sundayat 9pm to 11.30pm every 30 mins. Last show starts 11pm.
Barcelona's most famous fountain, the Magic Fountain, is on Plaça de Carles Buïgas near Plaza Espanya in Barcelona. The Magic Fountain is one of the Barcelona's most popular and loved landmarks and a top ten Barcelona tourist must-see. It was designed by Carles Buigas for the 1929 Barcelona International Exhibition. Buigas added light, colour and sound to the water movement and he designed the Magic fountains to cascade down the hill from the Palau Nacional building (now the
MNAC Museum ) like a raging river down to the Magic Fountain before "dying" in the sea along the avenue of Avinguda Maria Cristina.

Around 2.5 million people visit the Magic Fountain every year. The magic fountain in Barcelona has many different choreographies ranging from film music shows, classical music shows, a zarzuela, a twentieth and twenty-first century remix and an pop mix with the song Barcelona, by Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballé. The fountain has a water recirculation system following the introduction of a drought decree in 2008 by the Catalan government, the Generalitat. The Magic fountain is open to everyone and admission is free. In December there is a special Christmas water and music show on Fridays and Saturdays and on 25th December and 1st January between 19:00 to 21:00
. The fountain is closed every year from mid January to mid February for annual maintenance.

The biggest night of the year for the Magic Fountain is the Merce Festival The final event of the Merce festival is the traditional Piromusical show at Magic Fountain. This is a super music, water, laser light and fireworks display which changes theme from year to year. Spectators fill the entire length of the Avenue of Maria Cristina from the two Venetian towers, so we recommend that you get there around 21.00 to get the best spot to stand or sit. There are not seats though - you stand on the avenue during the show. It's a very nice event suitable for all ages and with a magical atmosphere. The piromusical is transmitted live on Catalan TV3.
