Piano week in Barcelona. The
International Music Competition Maria Canals of Barcelona was founded in
1954 by the pianist Maria Canals and her husband, the writer Rossend
Llates. The 56th Barcelona Maria Canals International
Music Competition brings
91 pianists from 26 countries. It is held primarily at the Palau de la
Música in Barcelona. More than 100 families from
Barcelona
graciously lend their pianos to contestants during the competition. The first prize, the Barcelona Prize,
has doubled to €20,000 thanks to the support of the City Council. The
second has increased from €6,000 to €10,000 and the third from €3,000 to
€6,000. For the first time, all the finalists will receive €1,000. The
qualifying rounds will take place from 14 to 21 March, in the Petit
Palau, and the final, with the Vallès Symphony Orchestra, will be held
on 24 March at the Palau de la Música. For the general public there is a
series of Off-competition concerts
with over 40 recitals have been organised around the city, many free,
in civic centres, libraries and even on the Metro.
In a related event called
“Play Me, I’m Yours" more than 20 pianos will be spread around the city on different dates in March in some very unusual places including
Rambla del Raval, Plaça de Sarrià, Can Brians prison and the Line 2
metro station lobby in Plaça de la Universitat and Parc de la Ciutadella. They are for anyone to play when they want. This is an international artwork by Luke Jerram called “Play Me, I’m Yours." After being in a public BCN location, the pianos will be donated to local schools and community groups.
On Tuesday 16 March 2010 a "Spring
and
Music" festival will be held in 10 Barcelona city parks. What's more, on Friday
2, students at the La Massana Art and Design School will be painting
pianos.
