Plaça de Sant Felip Neri

Plaça de Sant Felip Neri. Plaça de Sant Felip Neri is a tiny square with a charming fountain in Barcelona's Gothic Quarter in the district of Ciutat Vella in Barcelona and at the entrance to Barcelona's Jewish Quarter. The square takes its name from the Church of Saint Philip Neri in the plaza. There is also a school called school of Sant Felip Neri and the children still use the square as their playground.

The square was originally home to the Palace of Neri built in 1752. During the Spanish Civil War fascist bombs fell on the square in January 1938 killing 30 people most of whom were children from the Sant Philip Neri school along with refugee children from Madrid living in the the church which had been turned into a make-shift orphanage. As people pulled survivors from the rubble, a second bomb hit the square, killing 12 more bringing the death toll to 42. It was the second worst bombing hit in Barcelona during the civil war. Evidence of the bombings can be seen in the pockmarked walls of the church.
