La Casa de les Punxes - modernist building
La Casa de les Punxes. Casa Terradas - Casa de les Punxes. La Casa de les Punxes - house of spikes - is a unique modernist building in Barcelona on Avenida Diagonal 420. It looks like a medieval gothic palace of some kind but is actually a residential block and one of Barcelona's many iconic modernist landmarks. It was declared a historical monument of national interest in 1976.

La Casa de les Punxes was designed by modernist architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch from 1903 to 1905. It was commissioned by wealthy textile manufacturer Bartomeu Terradas Brutau as a residence for his three sisters.

For this reason the house which looks like a single structure is actually three buildings, one for each sister. The nickname means 'the house of the spikes' which it was given because of the 6 spiked towers.

After being closed to the public for more than 100 years, visitors now have an opportunity to visit parts of the building on tours that include the ground floor, first floor, terrace and one of towers.

Visitors can soak up the medieval and Wagnerian atmosphere that inspired the modernist architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch and be dazzled by the stained glass windows, ironwork, paintings and sculptural elements.

The majestic rooftop is now dedicated to the Terradas family and the architect and artists who created this building.
