Event Description

La Immaculada 2018 public holiday

Día de la Inmaculada Concepción - Immaculate Conception

Event date: Saturday 8th December 2018
Event location: Barcelona and Spain

'Día de la Inmaculada Concepción' - the Day or Feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Maria. This is a public holiday in all Spain and signals the start of Christmas celebrations. This is often one of the special shopping days in Barcelona when big stores like Corte Ingles department stores andBarcelona shopping malls open for Christmas shopping. La Inmaculada is not celebrated with any special events in Barcelona. La Immaculada holiday is just two days after the holiday of Dia de la Constitucion on 6th December, so many people enjoy a long weekend and the ski resorts near Barcelona and in Andorra hope to be open for the start of a new skiing season.

It is common in Spain to take the day off in between a public holiday (dia festivo) and the weekend if the public/bank holiday is on a Tuesday or Thursday.  In Spain this is called 'to make a bridge' or 'hacer puente' in Spanish. Puente weekends in Barcelona cause a huge exodus from the city, so expect long traffic delays leaving and returning to Barcelona.

Catalonia is an autonomous province of Spain, which means that there are also some autonomous regional holidays just for Barcelona and Catalonia.
