Is smoking allowed on Barcelona beaches?


Can you smoke on the beach in Barcelona, Spain? No. From 30th July 2022 smoking has not been allowed on sand areas of all Barcelona beaches or on the "Zona de baños del Fòrum." All Barcelona beaches are smoke-free spaces. This ban includes tobacco products and devices that release nicotine.

Where is smoking allowed on the beach.
Smoking is allowed on beach bar terraces and on pavements. Fines of €30 for smoking on the sand area of beach will be imposed.

Objective of smoke-free beaches.
The objective is both to keep the beach clean and raise awareness about the dangers of smoking. Cigarette butts are a significant source of litter, and beaches are particularly sensitive environments. Cigarette filters can take years to decompose and may leach harmful chemicals into the sand and water, posing a threat to marine life. 

Fines:
Fines of €30 for smoking on the sand area of beach will be imposed. Barcelona's beach information service will monitor smoke-free beaches and inform users of current regulations and the harmful effects of tobacco and cigarette butts on people's health and the environment.
