Mostra de Vins i Caves de Catalunya 2018. Barcelona Wine & Cava Festival.  38th edition. Barcelona's biggest wine festival is part of the annual Barcelona Mercè festival. This is Barcelona's biggest wine festival featuring local wine and cava from the Catalan wine regions and some typical regional foods. Catalonia has a long history of wine-making dating back to the Greeks who first introduced vines to the northern Empordà region to the north of Barcelona, and later under Roman rule wine regions were developed to the south of Barcelona in the Penedes and Tarragona areas.

The Mostra de Vins i Caves de Catalunya showcases over 70 top wineries present wines fromthe 12 Catalan denominations of origin which include DO Alella, Catalonia, Cava, Conca de Barbera, Costers del Segre, Empordà Montsant Penedès Pla de Bages, Priorat, Tarragona and Terra Alta regions.

The wine festival includes the 'Trobada d'Intercanvi de Plaques de Cava Diada' event on one of the wine festival days from 10am to 2pm which gives collectors of Cava bottle top wrappers - called a 'chapa de cava,' an opportunity to meet to trade cava tops.

Organised by Associació Vinícola Catalana and Institut del Cava y Pimecava

How to get to Arc del Triomf in Barcelona

Arc del Triomf on Passeig Lluis Companys. This arch monument was built as the entrance to the Barcelona 1888 Universal exhibition. It was designed by modernist architect 'Josep Vilaseca i Casanovas' in a moorish revival style.

The stone sculpture on the front frieze is by Josep Reynés and is called 'Barcelona rep les nacions' in the Catalan language, which means 'Barcelona welcomes the nations.'

The opposite frieze contains a stone carving named 'Recompense', a work from the earliest period of celebrated Spanish/Catalan sculptor Josep Llimona. At the top of the arch you can see the Barcelona coat of arms and also that of all  49 other Spanish provinces by artists Torquat Tassó and Antoni Vilanova.
The street and pedestrian passage from the Arc del Triomf arch to the Parc de la Ciutatdella is called Pg Lluis Companys named after a former President of Catalonia. This area is perfect for smaller events and festivals and often is part of bigger city wide festivals including the annual Merce festival. Notable annual events here include Catalan national day gatherings on 11th September called Festa per la Llibertat and sometimes this venue is used for big football match screenings and as part of many top Barcelona festivals.

It is a lovely place for walks and for bicycling especially in combination with a visit to the nearby Cuitadella Park.
