Plaza Catalunya is Barcelona's central square and the center of downtown Barcelona. This is the most central place to stay in Barcelona and close to transport connections and many Barcelona sights and attractions.

Plaza Catalunya was designed by architect Francesc de Paula Nebot. The square was inaugurated on November 2nd 1927 by Spanish King Alphonso XIII.

The plaza has a small temple with a central colonnade, fountains and 28 sculptures in stone and bronze, by leading sculptors of the time.

Josep M. Subirachs's striking monument to former President of Catalunya President Francesco Macià later brought the number of sculptures to 29 in total. Plaza Catalunya is the center of public transport in Barcelona with many metrobus and tour bus connections.

Tourist Office Plaza Catalunya

Barcelona's main Tourist Office of Barcelona is on Plaza Catalunya in an underground office on the corner of Plaza Catalunya near the pedestrian street Portal de l'Àngel. Plaza Catalunya is the place where two of Barcelona´s most famous streets begin (or end) which are pedestrian street Las Ramblas and the elegant designer shopping boulevard Passeig de Gracia.

On Plaza Catalunya itself you can find the top department store El Corte Ingles - the American restaurant and bar Hard Rock Cafe Barcelona, a small shopping centre El Triangle and many nice hotels near Plaza Catalunya.

Plaza Catalunya is an important transport hub and the first place many tourists arrive in Barcelona if you take the Aerobus airport buses in front of the Corte Ingles store to and from Barcelona Airport.  There also many night buses and regional buses connections on Plaza Catalunya, as well as the station Catalunya, where you can catch metro trains, regional trains and FGC trains.

Metro to Plaza Catalunya

You can get to Plaza Catalunya by metro. The metro station on Plaza Catalunya is called Catalunya and Metro stations Passeig de Gracia or Urquinanona are just one block away. Many bus lines and night bus lines have stops at Plaza Catalunya. Both Barcelona hop-on-hop-off tourist bus have stops on Pl Catalunya and the Aerobus airport buses too.
