The Sitges film festival is one of Spain's oldest film festivals dating back to 1968.

The SITGES Film Festival is considered the most important global fantasy film festival presenting the best films and awards in the genre.

News about 2020 edition from the festival organisers

For eleven days, Sitges becomes the most comfortable and safest setting to disconnect, and to let yourself be surprised and entertained by the world's best fantastic films.

Once again this year, the 53rd Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia has everything ready and waiting to present, with every guarantee and convenience, eleven days packed with entertainment and the very latest in fantastic genre films. 254 pieces including feature films, shorts and documentaries, at 7 different screening venues - 4 of them movie theaters -, reserved advance seating, with social distancing and limited seating capacity, and full air and sanitation measures and controls in all venues to guarantee, as always, a comfortable and fantastic experience for all viewers.

From October 8th to 18th, you will once again find the very best genre films in Sitges. The latest fantastic productions, more than a dozen debut features, a significant number of female directors as is customary, in a year featuring a large number of Catalan and Spanish productions, as well as world premieres, the potential of short films as a genre in their own right, the most comprehensive selection of animated films, daring independent auteur films and surprising documentaries that will be filling all of the Festival's theaters.

And new this year, the Festival's online Virtual Cinema, where 155 pieces from the official line-up will be screened, giving shape to this new hybrid format that will allow the Festival to continue pleasing its fans who are unable to travel to Sitges due to our current circumstances.

Sitges 2020 is already prepared to continues to offer a world-class cinematic event, adapting and updating itself to our new times, but maintaining its essence and most of its activities with every guarantee to accomplish its goal: to entertain and delight its fantastic film lovers.

A 53rd edition presenting numbers that guarantee strong emotions and unique experiences: 254 pieces in the official line-up, 12 book, comic and festival presentations in the Garbí Room at the Meliá, over 20 Sitges Film Hub activities, 3 exhibitions, 3 official Festival books, 2 competitions and a fresh range of parallel events to enjoy cinema as a family and teach children a passion for fantastic genre with the Fantàstic Kids section, the new Puck Cinema Caravan, 11 outdoor animated film screenings at the Hort de Can Falç and 4 at the Miramar Cultural Center, 4 online workshops, plus 3 Shared Reading sessions at Sitges' Libraries.

And all this without forgetting the 10 stands in the new Fanshop Area in front of the San Sebastian Chapel and 10 food trucks overlooking the sea to recharge your batteries. Sitges 2020 is ready to receive the best in fantastique.

The Sitges Wine festival usually coincides with the film festival but has been cancelled for 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic

There is usually a special Fantàstic Train shuttle train from Barcelona to Sitges for the film festival. It usually operates every night during the festival departing from Sitges at 01:30 am.

How to get to Sitges from Barcelona

Sitges is a popular and exclusive sea-side resort located about 45 kilometers south of Barcelona in Catalonia, Spain. Sitges is well known for the Sitges Film Festival in October and the Sitges Carnival in February. Sitges also offers visitors a very nice selection of beaches, nightspots, and historical sites.

Getting to Sitges from Barcelona

By car

The C-32 tollroad is the fastest way to drive to Sitges from Barcelona. It connects Sitges with Barcelona in 30 minutes. You can also take the free C31 coastal road, which is very scenic, but it has many bends and can be quite congested.

By bus

Bus company Mon-bus operates buses from Barcelona and from Barcelona airport to Sitges

By train

Sitges is under between 35 and 45 minutes from Barcelona by R2 south line train. The railway company is called Renfe. The trains connections are called Cercanias/Rodalies: The trains to Sitges are on the R2 south line which departs from stations in the center of Barcelona to outlying suberbs of Barcelona and towns nearby. Regional trains to Sitges leave every 15 minutes from various stations in Barcelona including Passeig de Gracia (currently undergoing renovation), Catalunya or Sants: Price for a return ticket around 10 euros.

How to get to Sitges from Barcelona airport

The nearest airport to Sitges is Barcelona El Prat Airport

Bus company MonBus operates a bus service every 30 minutes from Barcelona airport to Sitges

The ticket price is €4.10 with €3 airport supplement

The MonBus bus stop is only at Airport T1 Terminal 1 - not at airport T2 Terminal 2

How to get from T2 terminal to T1
If you are arriving at Terminal 2 T2, then you need to take the free airport shuttle bus from terminal T1 to T2 to be able to connect to the Monbus bus to Sitges.

The free T1 > T2 bus runs every 7 minutes, 24 hours a day.  

At T2 terminal the terminal bus is located under the bridge outside T2B which will take you to T1.

The distance between the two Barcelona airport terminals is 4km and the shuttle bus journey time is 10-15 minutes.
