Reasons why self-catering apartments are a family friendly way to stay in Barcelona.

1. Affordable for families

You save money! For a family with children visiting Barcelona, you simply get more value for money in an apartment. Apartments are typically half the price of hotels and you get more space and comfort. In an apartment you only pay for accommodation, so you are not paying for many facilities that a family might not use in a hotel, like restaurants, gyms, rooms service, movies channels and more. Also there are savings on things like WiFi and TV which sometimes are charged seperately per person or per room in hotels.

2. Kitchen

Big savings again for families. In a family apartment you get a proper kitchen or kitchette, which means big savings on food plus the convenience of being able to cook a home cooked breakfast just the way the children like it. A big fridge (vs a mini-bar fridge) means you can stock up with your own food, snacks and drinks at much cheaper supermarket prices. There are many great places to eat out in Barcelona, but paying for 3 meals a day for a whole family with kids in restaurants does add up and can be tiring and time consuming. So save money and have some meals in your own flat. If you don't want to cook, but would like a pizza or restaurant quality meal delivered to the family flat in Barcelona, then order in. Visit one of Barcelona's takeaway food websites.

3. More space

Vacation apartments are generally bigger than hotel rooms which is great for families. Staying in a hotel room as a family can be crowded and frustrating after a few days. An apartment means several bedrooms, more bathrooms, sometimes more than one TV and usually a DVD player, so you can keep the kids happy! Often there might be a terrace with sun beds. Some Barcelona short term rental apartments have communal pools too.

4. More privacy

Privacy. No room service or cleaning usually (some apartments do provide cleaning) so no maids or hotel staff people hotel knocking on your door. You can be as relaxed and a bit messy and tidy when you feel like it or when you check out. Some apartments will ask that you do some basic cleaning and tidying on check-out.

5. More comfort and facilities

Barcelona Apartments are often better furnished and better equipped than hotel rooms Most of the best rental agencies make sure that the apartments have modern TV’s, a full range of kitchen equipment and other useful items to make your stay more pleasant. You have an iron, a kettle, a desk. All little things that make the stay a little easier for families. Apartments also often have bigger terraces or balconies and sometimes better views.

6. Local feel

Local feel. Staying in an apartment in a local neighbourhood in Barcelona is just that bit more personal and authentic and gives the kids a closer look at local culture and living in other countries. The familiy might be in a typical residential building with local residents for neighbours. You can shop in local shops or the fantastic fresh food markets that are in all areas of Barcelona, so you get a real feel for the city and the Barcelona way of life. Remember that your neighbours are not on holiday, so don’t disturb them at night. In Barcelona and Spain respect for neighbours privacy is very important, and generally it is frowned upon to play loud music at home or be noisy late at night.

7. Clothes washing/drying

Clothes washing/drying. This is just very practical for families with children. Now that low cost airlines are charging for luggage you can pack less and wash a little on holiday. Clothes will quickly dry in the sun or in the dryer. Most family friendly flats have dishwashers, washing machines, dryers, iron and ironing board, so you can wash during your stay -  and even better take clean clothes home.

Tips Barcelona family apartments

1. Late arrival times

The owner of the apartment might be the person who meets you at the apartment. If you arrive after the shops have closed. then you will not have any food in the apartment until the next day. There might be an extra charge for late check-in.  So try and arrange flights at reasonably normal times. Most shops in Barcelona close for the day between 19.00 and 20.00. There are often local grocers or convenience stores, who stay open til midnight or longer. Restaurants in Barcelona serve dinner from 8.30 and almost until midnight, so you can usually find somewhere to eat on the first night. Or get a takeaway. Big supermarkets are open until 22.00 and the SuperCor chain of convenience shops are also open late.

2. Parking place

Parking places.  Apartments don't often include a parking place, which top hotels often do. Hotels even have parking on-site sometimes, but usually not free. However if you are arriving by car, then Barcelona has many public parking places all over the city, so you can usually find a parking lot close to apartments. But remember to ask the agency. They will be able to help you. Parking is usually about 25-30 euros a day at public parking lots.

3. Deposit

Deposit. You might have to pay an advance deposit. This can be 50% in advance and then 50% in cash to the owner at check-in but this can vary. So make sure you deal with a recommeded agency in Barcelona. If you treat the apartment with care you will have no problems getting your deposit back. If you break something, then it is deducted from the deposit. If you see anything that looks broken or about to break, then be sure to make a note of it, when you are with the owner or agent when you take over the apartment. If something is broken or breaks, tell the agency sooner rather than later.

4. Length of stay

Duration of stay. You might have to book holiday apartments for a minimum of 2-3 nights but that is usually fine for families and groups.

5. Reception or room service

Family apartments don't often have reception or room service. At a hotel help is always available at the reception. In an apartment you are on your own. The apartment agency or owner might be able to help in an emergency, but they usually don't provide tourist information or no room service. But if you have an Ipad or laptop and the apartment has good WiFi which many do, then you can find and book Barcelona tours in the comfort of your apartment and find lots of information online about what to see in Barcelona

6. Choice of apartment agency

Choose a recommended and established accommodation booking website. There are many apartment agencies in Barcelona and some might not live up to their promises. Some tourist apartments are not officially registered by the owners as tourist rental apartments and you risk being evicted during your stay. Be sure to confirm this with the owner first.
