About Eixample area

Eixample is generally a very popular place to stay in Barcelona for it's architecture, charm and wide selection of tourist sights, restaurants and shops.

The Eixample district of Barcelona is the name of the 19th century modernist area of Barcelona that was developed when the old walled medieval city became too overcrowded.

In the late 19th century the old Barcelona city walls were demolished and a new part of the city called the Eixample was built. There is only one remaining piece of Barcelona's medieval walls which is part of the former Royal shipyards - Drassanes Reials - and now home to the Barcelona Maritime Museum.

The name Eixample actually means 'extension' in the Catalan language. In Spanish the name of this area is Ensanche, but that is rarely used these days.

The Eixample district is Barcelona's most central district and covers a large area of Barcelona.

It is split into two main parts which are Eixample left and Eixample right - and within these two parts are many smaller neighbourhoods.

In the middle, Eixample borders on the Barcelona's gothic city area at the central square Plaça Catalunya and staying here is a popular because you are close to the medieval areas of Barcelona and the 19th century modernist areas.

Some of Barcelona's most iconic and popular hotels are in the Eixample area - especially on elegant shopping boulevard Passeig de Gracia.

Eixample is a very safe, interesting, stylish and central area to stay in Barcelona with many sights, stunning modernist architecture on tree lined streets and many high quality shop, cafes and restaurants.

Some streets in the Eixample are very noisy and busy, so be sure to read the hotel reviews when booking hotels.

Popular areas to stay in the Eixample part of Barcelona include:

- near or on fashionable shopping street Passeig de Gracia, home to 2 famous modernist buildings by Antoni Gaudi.

- near central square Plaza Catalunya

- near Barcelona's biggest attraction the Sagrada Familia unfinished church

- near Plaza Espanya and in the Sant Antoni area which is close to top attractions like Magic Fountain, the Spanish village Poble Espanyol and Montjuic hill

- on or near quiet and tree lined street called Carrer d'Enric Granados
